About the Course

Why Study Science at Flinders?
With a Bachelor of Science from Flinders you get:
  • a strong foundation in Science;
  • a flexible structure so you can cross traditional discipline boundaries; and
  • workplace skills, including problem solving, teamwork, computing and communication
This degree was restructured recently to provide a greater range of options for students who want to discover where science can take them - and where they can take science. There is greater flexibility in the program, allowing students to follow their interests without being confined by traditional discipline boundaries. Students have the opportunity to major in areas previously available only in specialist degrees and with the introduction of new majors, extended majors, and minors the opportunities have expanded even further.

The role and value of the degree has not changed. It is designed to provide the strongest possible foundation for a science-based career. Our graduates are equipped not just to find their first job in their chosen field, but to explore new options in later years as science - and their own interests change and develop. As well as understanding science, they will learn to appreciate its role in society. Students do not need a science background to enrol in this degree. There are no prerequisites and introductory studies are offered where necessary.

Provided a sufficiently high standard has been achieved in fulfilling the requirements of the bachelors degree, a student can progress to an Honours (fourth) year which will allow them to further develop their professional skills, particularly those relevant to research and development, as well as their technical expertise and knowledge. After successfully completing Honours, a student may choose to do a postgraduate research degree.

Career Opportunities
Bachelor of Science can open up an exciting range of career opportunities in areas as diverse as business, industry, small to medium enterprise, government, teaching and research. Students interested in an even broader range of career options, particularly in research and development, can extend their studies by completing an honours degree, or undertaking further postgraduate or professional studies. As well as the range of professional career options, science graduates are finding their skills in demand in non-science areas such as business and marketing.

Combining Degrees
Science / Education (Junior Primary/Primary, Middle School and Secondary)
4 years full-time or equivalent part-time.
To be considered for these combined degrees, applicants must apply for both the relevant Bachelor of Education degree and the Bachelor of Science via SATAC.
 

Science / Innovation & Enterprise (Science & Technology)
Adds one additional year to your full-time study program.

If you want to boost your business, management, enterprise and communication skills, and undertake a concentrated period of practical work experience, consider combining this degree with the Bachelor of Innovation and Enterprise (Science and Technology (BIE). You’ll graduate with two degrees. More importantly, you’ll increase your immediate attractiveness to employers and your potential to become a business leader. You will need to apply for both the Bachelor of Science and the BIE via SATAC.


Science / Laws and Legal Practice
6 years full-time or part-time equivalent.
To be considered for this combined degrees program applicants must apply for the Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice via SATAC. Students who are offered a place in Laws and Legal Practice will be given the option of taking up the combined degrees program at the time of enrolment.

What Will I Study?
The program combines technical knowledge and practical training specific to a chosen area of specialisation with a broad range of workplace skills such as problem solving, critical analysis, written and oral presentation, teamwork and computing. These have been included because employers tell us they make our graduates work ready. The program includes a variety of approaches to teaching and learning, including web-based course materials and video lectures in some subject areas, which help to make the program more accessible.

Students choose a range of general or introductory subjects in the First Year. In Second and Third Years, students are able to specialise in one or more areas of science, and can combine traditional disciplines such as Chemistry, Computer Science and Biological Sciences with new areas of science including Bioinformatics, and Ocean and Climate Sciences.

As well as an increased range of options, extended majors are available for those students who wish to advance and broaden their study in a single area.

Elective topics from non-science areas, such as the Humanities (eg, Archaeology, Legal Studies, Philosophy), Languages (eg, Spanish, Japanese, German) and Social Sciences (eg, Geography, Environmental Studies, Psychology) may also be included.

Selecting from a range of majors, extended majors, and minors, students can choose one of the following pathways:
  • a major (36 units), a minor (12 units) and electives - for example: a major in Ocean and Climate Sciences, a minor in Chemistry, and Science or non-Science (eg, Environmental Studies) elective topics;
  • two majors in Science (36 units each) - for example: majors in Chemistry, and Computer Science;
  • an extended major (48 units) and electives in a Science or non-Science area - for example: an extended major in Bioinformatics and electives in Mathematics or Legal Studies.

Entry requirements

Australian Students
SATAC Code: 214331

There are no prerequisites or assumed knowledge.

Year 12 applicants must have qualified for SACE and obtained Recorded Achievement in at least five two-unit SACE Stage 2 subjects. Included among the five must be four HESS General subjects.

Applicants who have completed the following are eligible to apply:
  • SACE (Year 12) or interstate equivalent;
  • International Baccalaureate (IB);
  • TAFE/VET;
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT);
  • Foundation Course/Bridging Program;
  • Overseas qualifications;
  • Tertiary Transfer (Grade Point Average - GPA); and
  • Other access schemes are eligible to apply.

Transferring Credit
Credit will be considered for any previous tertiary study. These cases will be considered on an individual basis, and application can be made through the normal channels of applying for status.
